N4Methyl and N4Dimethyl Substituted Sulfanilamides

The purpose of this study was to determine whether acetylation of the sulfonamide drugs in the human body could be prevented by substituting a simple alkyl radicle on the amino group of the drug without otherwise impairing the efficiency of its therapeutic action. Methyl and dimethyl substituted sulfanilamides were made and investigated from a pharmacological and therapeutic viewpoint. Because of the theoretical implications these drugs were tested for their action in vitro. Although it has been stated that alkyl substituted compounds of this nature are less active in vivo2'4 than sulfanilamide, the only compounds that have been described are the acylalkyl derivative, acetylmethyl sulfanilamide,l and the arylalkyl derivative, benzyl sulfanilamide.3
